high q technologies
mechanical engineering co-op
may 2024 - aug 2024
high-q technologies is a biotechnology startup developing new instruments for chemical analysis of proteins to enable new drug discoveries. my work was focused on developing mechanical systems of the machine, and pushing towards the first production-equivalent prototype. my day-to-day work consisted of designing parts to improve manufacturability. i got to build a large part of the new structure myself, and it was super cool to see my work come to life. some interesting projects i worked on included:
designed the packaging and arrangement of RF and microwave components to fit inside a standardized enclosure, minimizing signal noise and interference, while reducing cost and complexity
automating a sample protection cover (for the "wow" factor) while working around narrow space constraints
i made ~75 drawings to prepare for manufacturing send-outs, applying GD&T as necessary
performed fea simulations to determine baseplate thickness, balancing cost and strength
it gave me a ton of perspective into DFM for sheet metal, precision linear motion systems, and integrated machine design/product development.
